Red Oak Grand Staircase

Project Overview

This front entrance renovation replaced a dated carpet staircase with a custom hardwood focal point. Every tread started as a 1-1/8" thick red oak board from the lumber yard. For the pie-shaped landing, several boards were glued and pocket-screwed together into a single blank, then hand-cut to the exact geometry of the stairwell before sanding, staining, and finishing.

The stain was hand-matched to the home's existing hardwood floors throughout, so the new staircase reads as though it's always been part of the house. Risers, balusters, and trim were painted crisp white for contrast against the rich oak grain.
